Ready, Set, School: Top tips for preparing children for big school.

Updated: Nov 20

Big school is just around the corner! Early educators are busy helping preschoolers across the country get ready for this exciting adventure. There is also important collaborative planning taking place between ECEC services, families, schools and communities to help ensure children feel a sense of belonging in their new school environment.

Prepare your child for big school over the holidays

Families play a crucial role in helping to prepare children for a smooth transition. Here are some suggestions for practical things you can do over the summer holidays to help your child feel confident and excited about starting big school.

Talk about it together:

  • Have positive conversations about starting school. Talk about the exciting things they will learn, the new friends they will make, and the fun activities they will do.

  • Reassure your child if they express any worries or fears.

  • Read picture books about starting school together. This can help your child visualise the experience and spark conversations.

Our top 3 book recommended reads are:

  • Starting School by Jane Godwin and Anna Walker

  • On the Way to School by Vikki Conley and Lucia Masciullo

  • Old Friends, New Friends by Andrew Daddo and Jonathan Bentley

Practice routines:

  • Practice a morning routine that is similar to their school routine. This includes getting dressed, eating breakfast, and brushing teeth.

  • Walk or drive to school together before the first day. This will help your child become familiar with the route and school drop off area.

  • Develop independent skills by encouraging your child to put on their own shoes and open their lunchbox.

Build social skills:

  • Arrange playdates with other children who will be starting at the same school. This will help them practice social skills like sharing, taking turns, and co-operating with peers.

  • Take part in group activities like story time at your local library or playgroup. These events provide opportunities for your child to continue to interact with other children in a group setting over the holiday period.

Prepare their school bag:

  • Label all of your child's belongings including their uniform, shoes, and lunchbox.

  • Help your child pack their school bag with their lunchbox, water bottle, and hat.
